The Seen – Official blog for EXPO CHICAGO

This week on The Seen, we featured Dawoud Bey’s exhibition at The Renaissance Society. Bey grew up in Harlem and began taking pictures when he was 22 years old. Taking pictures of the city streets like many photographers before him, these works became known as the series Harlem, U.S.A. These are perhaps Bey’s best known works that capture the identity of individuals within a particular place. This exhibition highlights his works completed after that initial series.
Next, we reviewed an exhibition by John Gossage at Stephen Daiter Gallery. The Pond is comprised of 52 vintage silver print photographs, first published as a book of the same name in 1985. It has been Gossage’s desire to keep The Pond in tact to preserve the storyline presented in the book. The Pond is graceful and provocative in its subtle handling of its subject, and one show we encourage you not to miss.
We had the opportunity to tweet from dOCUMENTA (13), providing a first look at some of the incredible work on view.
